You have a motor for your kayak. This guide covers fitting, the first charge, how to stretch your range, the safety system and care between seasons.
The parts of the system
- The motor, which drives the propeller.
- The battery (PowerBox on MK2 models): its capacity in Wh sets how long you can run.
- The control unit: it sets the speed, has reverse and holds the HAA key. Models with telemetry show speed, consumption, battery level and temperature.
Fitting the mount
The propeller must stay fully under water even with the kayak loaded: if it sits too high it draws air and loses thrust. Fit the motor straight, in line with the kayak, so it does not pull to one side. The kit includes a universal stern mount.
The first charge
Charge the battery to 100 % before your first trip and always use a charger made for its chemistry and voltage: HV lithium-ion batteries from the 16.8 V range charge at 16.8 V, and LiFePO4 batteries have their own charger. Lithium batteries have no memory effect, so partial charging does not harm them.
How to stretch your range
Cruise at medium speed and keep full power for pushing through a current or a gust of wind. As a reference, the MK2 1CV with 750 Wh gives 3 to 4 hours at cruising speed, and over 6 hours with the 1,100 Wh PowerBox 3. If you need more, MK2 motors accept a dual battery.
The HAA system
The HAA key plugs into the control unit and is clipped by its lanyard to your life jacket or wrist. If you fall into the water and the key comes off, the motor stops. Never run the motor without the key attached to you.

Fresh water and salt water
In fresh water, rinsing the motor with clean water after each trip is enough. At sea, rinse the motor, the mount and the connectors with fresh water after every outing and protect the connectors with dielectric grease.
Before storing it for winter
- Leave the battery at 50 to 60 % charge.
- Clean and fully dry the motor and mount.
- Store the battery somewhere cool and dry, away from heat.
- Check cables, connectors and propeller.
